Our Story – The Heart Behind Excel Plumbing and Heating
It all started with my dad, Dale—better known as “Limey.” He grew up in socialist England during a time when unemployment hovered around 18%. Raised by a single mom doing her best in tough times, he and his brother Glen were often hungry. One of his most vivid memories is of his mom visiting the butcher to ask for “bones for the dog.” One day, young Dale asked, “But we don’t have a dog…” That’s when he realized—those bones were for making broth. That early experience of going without became the fire that fueled his future.
As a teen, Limey’s drive and ingenuity landed him a spot at Her Majesty’s Royal Academy of Trades—a prestigious four-year college. He graduated as a master plumber with nothing but a motorcycle and a bag of tools, ready to take on the world. He built a thriving commercial clientele and eventually, he and his brother set off for the United States. They landed jobs in pipefitting and quickly became known as “The Limey Brothers.”
After their first paycheck in America, they went grocery shopping and found themselves in tears—22 and 24 years old, standing beside overflowing carts, overwhelmed by the abundance. It was a turning point. The hunger was behind them, and gratitude for this country and its opportunities ran deep.
Eventually, Dad settled in Minnesota and raised our family—instilling in us that same grit, gratitude, and entrepreneurial spirit.
For us it’s more than business, it’s LEGACY.

Start of Excel Plumbing
Growing up, my mom, Jennifer, ran her own business from home for over 20 years. With parents like that, it’s no surprise I (Grace) had a passion for business too. My husband Peter and I soaked up everything we could, dreaming of starting something of our own one day.
Peter began with a small handyman service, quickly realizing the huge need for reliable contractors on the Iron Range. With my dad’s guidance, Peter found his calling in plumbing. He joined the Plumbing Union early and took full advantage of the hands-on learning and education during his apprenticeship. He graduated on time with his Master Plumber’s license—ready to turn our dream into reality.
” Dad described Peter as aggressive, talented, and hardworking.”
