5 Common Plumbing Problems in Northern Minnesota Homes (And How to Prevent Them)

At Excel Plumbing and Heating, we’ve seen just about everything in Northern Minnesota homes, from frozen pipes in February to sump pumps that give out in spring thaw. If you’re a homeowner up here, here are 5 common plumbing problems we see year after year and what you can do to stop them before they cost you big.

1. Frozen Pipes in Winter

Northern Minnesota winters are no joke. When temps drop below zero, uninsulated pipes, especially in crawlspaces or outside walls, can freeze and burst.

Prevention Tip

  • Insulate exposed pipes before winter
  • Keep your thermostat above 55°F even when away
  • Open cabinets under sinks on cold nights
  • Shut main water valve when gone for an extended period

2. Sump Pump Failures

Melting snow and spring rains put sump pumps to the test. If yours hasn’t been serviced, you might end up with a flooded basement.

Prevention Tip

  • Test your pump every few months
  • Consider a battery backup system
  • Consider a hydro backup system that utilizes municipal water if you are in town
  • Utilize quality pumps. We utilize Zoeller brand pumps that are built to last.
  • Call us for an annual sump pump inspection

3. Hard Water and Scale Buildup

Many Northern Minnesota homes have hard water, which leaves behind mineral deposits in water heaters and fixtures.

Prevention Tip

  • Install a water softener to protect your plumbing
  • Drain and flush your water heater yearly. We offer this as part of our maintenance package
  • Flush and service your tankless water heater or Combi Unit yearly to prevent scale up
  • Install a water conditioning system to help

4. Clogged Drains from Grease or Hair

Kitchen grease, hair in the tub, and other buildup are leading causes of slow drains and backups.

Prevention Tip

  • Avoid pouring grease down the drain. Use a can instead
  • Use mesh strainers in bathroom sinks and tubs
  • Use Bioclean or an enzyme cleaner to drain maintenance
  • If you notice slow drainage, don’t wait. We offer fast effective drain cleaning

5. Outdated or Corroded Pipes

Homes built before 1990 often have galvanized steel or copper pipes, which can corrode leak or affect water quality.

Prevention Tip

  • Look for signs like discolored water low pressure or leaks
  • We offer full repiping solutions with PEX or copper
  • Ask us about a plumbing inspection with your service
